In the debate about school choice, it has become accepted wisdom that alternative schools are causing socioeconomic and ethnic disparity in the Eugene School District's elementary schools. Opponents of school choice, along with the media, cite anecdotes but have provided no statistical analysis to back up this claim.

I am very concerned about school segregation and inequality, and I have a child in an alternative school. As a scientist, I also know how to analyze data. So I compiled Oregon Department of Education data and used well-accepted statistical techniques to evaluate them.

The results indicate that, contrary to widespread belief, alternative schools can and do play a positive role in improving educational quality and equality in Eugene's schools.
