Educators and employers throughout central Lane County are scrambling to help students and staff find alternative ways to school and work as a possible bus strike looms.

The Eugene School District has buses ready to roll in the event Tuesday of a strike by Lane Transit District's unionized workers. Downtown Eugene software company Lunar Logic is trying to arrange carpools for its many workers who often bus to the city center. Sacred Heart Medical Center is lining up a private bus service for many of its workers.

Negotiators for LTD's 188 drivers, 20 mechanics and 23 other workers have made little progress toward a new contract.

One last meeting between them is scheduled for Sunday, but the sides remain far apart on who will pick up the increasing costs of health insurance.

If the workers strike, the impacts will be significant throughout the areas served by LTD, including outlying communities.

In Cottage Grove, 171 people on average use the service each day. In Junction City, it's 103. Lowell, Veneta and Coburg riders total about 200, according to LTD records.

Backup buses

The Eugene School District, which normally provides no transportation for students attending its four main high schools, has school buses ready to roll in the event of a strike, spokesman Kelly McIver said.
