Renowned illustrator Alton S. Tobey, who died Jan. 4 at age 90, did more than paint some of the most beautiful illustrations that ever graced the pages of magazines and books, or the walls of the Westchester County Courthouse and other venues.
Tobey also helped build respect for illustrators within and beyond an art community that often viewed them as lesser talents because their work was commissioned by others rather than generated for the sake of free expression, said his son, David Tobey, who is also an artist.
"It was once not fashionable to think of illustration as fine art. He changed that," the younger Tobey said of his father.
