Hormel Foods Corp. has improved its pork industry position substantially with the acquisition of Clougherty Packing Co., which markets fresh and processed pork products in the southwestern U.S. under the well-established Farmer John label.

Hormel, the fifth-largest pork processor in the U.S., will expand its plant run capacity more than 25% and move very closely to number-four pork processor Excel Corp. in the acquisition, according to capacity listings compiled by the National Pork Promotion & Research Board (Table 1, p. 4). Clougherty was the 11th-largest pork producer.
