A firefighter can be held liable for a car accident even though it happened while he was responding to a call to help, the Virginia Supreme Court has held. In a split opinion, the court ruled that sovereign immunity did not apply in this case because the firefighter did not rely on any special "judgment or discretion beyond that necessary in an ordinary driving situation." (Friday-Spivey v. Collier, 601 S.E. 2d 591 (Va. 2004).)
