In the beginning, there was only my husband, our dog, and my very busy trial practice. My mother told me that I could not and should not attempt to be Superwoman and if I wanted a family, something was going to suffer.

Nine years later, my husband and I have a 4-year-old daughter and an 18-month-old son, and we happily struggle to juggle parenthood, marriage, my trial practice, and our sanity. My husband is an electrical engineer as well as a volunteer soccer and basketball coach for our daughter's teams. For starters, we gave away the dog, bought fish, and recruited grandparents for assistance.

I have chosen to both maintain a practice where I represent my clients well and, with my husband, raise two wonderful children. The perfect balance is elusive, but I can strive for it.

An excellent lawyer shared his routine with me while we mediated a case that had caused both of us great strife. He had three small children, a stay-at-home wife, and a part-time housekeeper. He wanted to be a part of his children's lives as well as bill as many hours as possible at his prominent defense firm.

His typical day went something like this: He would wake up at 6 a.m. to spend time with his one-year-old. Once the three- and four-year-olds woke up, they would all eat breakfast and spend playtime with Dad, who would usually arrive at his law office at about 9:30 and work nonstop. He would return home by 5:30 p.m., eat...
