Malcolm Bricklin's plan to import five new Chinese vehicles to the United States in 2007 is a long shot.

Up to three would be difficult but possible for Chery Automobile Co. Bringing five new vehicles of acceptable quality, all with new engines and some with new platforms, would be close to impossible, say U.S. industry experts and sources in China familiar with Chery.

But Chery has government support, lots of cash and determined leaders. It also has launched a crash program with help from overseas companies to develop vehicles for export. So the company can't be dismissed.
