For about six weeks last winter I was in Antarctica, doing research for a book about the role that ice has played in human history. One of the topics I intend to explore, in this history of ice, is the Sublime, the power of very grand, terrifying, and magnificent spectacles to move the human spirit and passions. Edmund Burke described those things that are boundless, astonishing, awe-inspiring, and powerful as Sublime; this is the greatest effect to be achieved in art. On the other hand, Beauty (according to Burke) is embodied in those qualities that cause love. Being a gentler emotion than the passion of the Sublime, Beauty is a less noble effect.

So there I was in Antarctica (the only continent, by the way, with no children on it)--surrounded by towering mountains, glaciers, ice sheets, volcanoes both extinct and steaming, boundless frost--contemplating the Sublime. But I found I did not...
