In the year 1680, the Spaniards after eight decades of settlement were driven from their towns, missions and estancias in the Franciscan Province of New Mexico. A rebellion by Pueblo Indian subjects in concert with neighboring Apachean groups forced the European settlers to flee southward. Spanish losses were very heavy. Some 380 men, women, and children (perhaps 15% of the Hispanic population) were killed of captured.
