From rockabilly queens to riot grrrls, from pop divas to folk heros, women have left a significant mark on the history of rock 'n' roll. Yet when Rolling Stone magazine recently named its 100 best guitarists of all time, only two women were judged to fit the bill: Joni Mitchell at No. 72 and Joan Jett at No. 87.

When it comes to rock, it's still a man's world to a great extent. But two Oregon State University professors, with a colleague from Montreat College in North Carolina, set out to not only trace history of women in rock 'n' roll,...
