New Year's Eve 2004 falls on a Friday - tonight - which means there are plenty of options for people who want to celebrate with a night on the town.
A family-friendly Last Night Celebration will take over Cozmic Pizza, 199 W. Eighth Ave., from 7:30 p.m. to 1 a.m.
The entertainment will take on a global flavor, with everything from tango and West African drumming to Middle Eastern and Brazilian elements.
Samba Ja, that funky, 30-piece percussion carnival, will cap off the night.
The idea, Samba Ja member and Last Night organizer Steve Holtzman said, is to provide a place where families can celebrate the new year together
`(Puppet makers) Jeff Lake and Tamara Crafts and I have participated heavily with First Night for many years, and last year we decided that it wasn't OK that First Night no longer existed,' he said. `So we decided we would create our own event and call it Last Night.
`The three of us really enjoy community-based, all-ages events, and so we decided to do this.'
That first year, only three acts were on the bill. This year, the list has expanded to more than half a dozen. The emcee for the night will be "an old queen," former Slug Queen Accordiana. Admission will be $5 to $10 on a sliding scale.
