Rita Whatley

A memorial celebration will be held today for Rita Mary Whatley of Eugene, who died Dec. 28 of age-related causes. She was 84.

She was born April 28, 1920, in Devils Lake, N.D., to Paul and Josephine Eckel Brandt. She moved to Eugene with her family in 1924 and graduated from Eugene High School in 1939.

She married James Whatley in 1946 in Portland. He died in 1990.

She worked as a switchboard operator for Southern Pacific Railroad. She was a member of the National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees, the United Transportation Union (formerly known as the Ladies Auxiliary of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen) and the Bethel Community Club.

She sang in a choir and performed with a trio for several years, worked crossword puzzles in ink and will be remembered by her family for her "lovely voice," her "lovable laugh" and her "beautiful smile." She enjoyed spending time with her friends and family.

Survivors include two daughters, Ellen Whatley of Eugene and Merita Whatley of Point Arena, Calif.; a son, Terry of Central Oregon; two sisters, Bonnie Justis and Marilyn Westbrook, both of Eugene; and one grandchild.

Today's gathering will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Lamb Cottage in Skinner Butte Park in Eugene.

Musgrove Family Mortuary in Eugene is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to Willamette Wildlife Rehabilitation and the Greenhill Humane Society.

Jeffrey Johnson

A memorial service will be held Jan. 9 for Jeffrey C. "Jeff" Johnson of Eugene, who died Dec. 23 of lung cancer. He was 55.

Johnson was born Feb. 20, 1949, in Modesto, Calif., to Duke and Myrle Mock Johnson. He married Bonita Hume.

He grew up in Eugene and attended South Eugene High School. He was the leader of the band JJ and the Nomads.

Johnson served in the Marine Corps from 1966 to 1969, and was awarded numerous medals and commendations, including the Gallantry Cross Medal. He received an honorable discharge...
