Plant closure hurts families

I just returned from a quick visit to my hometown, Galesburg, Ill. The Register-Guard did a story about the Maytag plant closure there and the loss of jobs. The story was great, but it didn't show firsthand how devastating the closure is to real families.

The employees and their families no longer can budget the little extras for the kids like fees for sports, music, books or even new clothes. They face the stress of realizing that if they or their families fall sick or have an emergency, that could throw them into bankruptcy.

I understand that some voters put the wars we are fighting, the jobs that American families are losing and the worldwide hatred for the United States on the back burner because people with moral values hate gay people and abortion.

Well, guess what: Keep your moral values to yourselves and save your prayers for some other weak-minded individuals.

A new hospital nightmare

I had a dream last night that the new McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center was open at the former Eugene Water & Electric Board site, and I was being rushed there by ambulance down Coburg Road. The ride was fast as we approached the Ferry Street Bridge, when suddenly we came to a screeching stop.

I overheard one of the paramedics exclaim in a frustrated tone, "Geez, another traffic jam. We probably should have taken the freeway through Glenwood and come in the back...
