For the longest time, the shots did not fall. But guess who did?

The Ducks, unranked but obviously undaunted, stayed after Stanford until the No. 5 Cardinal could take it no more, beating the 11-time Pac-10 Conference women's basketball champions 62-58 on Wednesday night.

A season-high McArthur Court crowd of 4,651 watched as Oregon ran its league record to 2-0, its overall performance to 9-2 and its stock way up.

"A win like this boosts our confidence and sets the standard for the rest of the year," said Andrea Bills, the senior center who had a game-high 18 points - 12 in the second half - and shared the game-high rebound honors with teammate Cathrine Kraayeveld, each with 15.

It was the fifth time Oregon has prevailed in the past seven games at Mac Court against this annually powerful Stanford team.

It was the highest-ranked team the Ducks have defeated in more than two decades.

"It was pretty special," said Bev Smith, off to her best start in four seasons at the UO coach.

It also was not easy.

Oregon had to weather the Cardinal storm and one even greater - its own.
