Al Brandt
SPRINGFIELD - A private service is planned for Al Brandt of Springfield, who died Dec. 29 of age-related causes. He was 96.
He was born Feb. 1, 1908, in Milwaukee, Wis., to Edwin and Alvina Kneiske Brandt. He married Helen Overman on Nov. 10, 1934, in Portland. She died Sept. 11, 1991.
Brandt graduated from high school in Milwaukee. He served in the Army during World War II in Germany and England.
In 1932, he became a manager of Beneficial Finance in Eugene. He later managed Beneficial Finance operations in Seattle and Tacoma until 1948, when he moved to Springfield. He opened Brandt Finance Co. in Springfield on Nov. 21, 1948, and owned and operated the company until Nov. 26, 2004.
He was a founder, director and treasurer of McKenzie-Willamette Memorial Hospital and a founder of the blood bank, serving as its chairman in 1951. He belonged to the Kiwanis Club, Lions Club and American Legion, and was a founder of the Springfield Boosters Club.
He served on the Springfield Planning Commission in 1952, the Springfield City Council in 1954 and the Mayor's Citizen Advisory Committee for Capital Improvements in 1955-56. He was president of the Springfield Chamber of Commerce in 1957. He served on the Springfield Utility Board. He was president of the Oregon Consumer Finance Association from 1963 to 1969. In 1970 he was appointed to the newly created Lane County Mass Transit District. The Springfield Chamber of Commerce gave him its Award of Excellence in 1990 and its First Citizen Award.
Survivors include a daughter, B.J. Brandt of Springfield, three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Buell Funeral Chapel in Springfield is in charge of arrangements.
