...shadow boxes, books and videos are overwrought, fully-rendered, crowded mysteries drenched in aberrant sexuality and perversely pleasurable horror. Like a cultural anthropologist, Lin thoroughly accounts for the populations of her environments. Her cosmology, even if ever shifting, is complete, reminiscent of the work of other creators of terrible and wondrous worlds like William Blake and Francisco Goya. Magicians, martyrs, murderers and maenads get chewed up and spat out again as inchoate and bastard children. I love Candice Lin's work, but I am not at all satisfied by it. I want more as soon as I've consumed what's there. "Mommy, will you tell me that story again, the one where your dog, Lady, gets poisoned?"

If many Generation X children grew up with video games, MTV, postmodern know-how and a penchant for camp, Candice may have been the odd-child-out, playing under bushes, dirty kneed, naming each pebble and giving it a role to play in an elaborate dramatic tableau.
