In December, The Procter & Gamble Company (Cincinnati, OH, 513-983-1100)(www.pg.com)(NYSE: PG) reported it has licensed its proprietary system for simulating plastic bottle packaging to Stress Engineering Services, Inc. (Mason, OH, 513-336-6701)(www.stress.com). The system, termed virtual package simulation (VPS), uses finite element analysis (FEA) software technology from ABAQUS, Inc. (Providence, RI, 401-276-4400)(www.abaqus.com), to automate the analysis of plastic bottles for structural performance.

The VPS system automates a set of simulations necessary to determine whether plastic bottle designs will perform as required. Advanced analysis technology, such as meshing and modeling of load cases, is built into the system, enabling designers have to simply submit bottle geometries and wait for quick results...
