A loud hiss greets the children as, eyes shielded by safety goggles, they enter a room filled with pipes, wires and gas canisters.

"You don't have to hold your ears," reassures their tour guide, Don Nissen, as he leads them into an area where an explosion is about to occur.

In this area, Underwriters Laboratories Inc. tests products for use in hazardous locations.

It is one of a number of Safety Smart stations at the Northbrook lab, where students in fourth through eighth grade learn about product safety by watching things get smashed, torched, frozen, exploded and drowned.
