The Thanksgiving season has always been one of my favorite times of year. Amid the hustle and bustle of the holidays, there is also time for reflection. I take stock in how far Elgin Area School District U-46 has come in the last year.

There are many to thank for what has been accomplished, and the members of our board of education certainly top the list for tirelessly giving their time and talents to help foster student achievement.

Several board members and staff joined me to present at this year's Joint Annual Conference in Chicago recently. The conference brings together members of the Illinois Association of School Boards, Illinois Association of School Administrators and the Illinois Association of School Business Officials.

This year's conference theme was "Lighting the Way," inspired by the President John F. Kennedy. He believed that America could truly light the way to a better world through a steadfast devotion to liberty and freedom. But as a first-century Greek philosopher once said, only the educated are free.

Our U-46 presentations included "Zapping the Achievement Gap, How to Keep Your District's Energies and Resources Focused on Learning," which centered on the efforts of our District Improvement Plan.

There are many "beacons of light" in our U-46 school community that have helped us work toward our ultimate goal of student achievement in the past year.
