To his discredit, Jerome Robbins named names. On May 5, 1953, in his first and only appearance before the House Un-American Activities Committee, Robbins voluntarily identified at least eight of his fellow enthusiasts and colleagues in various theater arts as Communists. Among those he singled out--and whose professional and personal lives suffered irremediably as a result--were associates who had benefited and advanced Robbins' own career. When he approached the committee, ready to testify, Robbins must have felt that he was about to do a shameful thing, for prior to being sworn in Robbins requested that the lights in the hearing room be turned out.

Nevertheless, Jerome Robbins is America's second greatest choreographer, and Deborah Jowitt has written a biography documenting his career. Her account is richly detailed; and while thoroughly, even studiously, researched, her book maintains an unflagging pace through an astonishingly full lifetime of achievements. With so much fame, as Deborah Jowitt retells with aplomb, her readers will never tire as Robbins jetes from pinnacle to pinnacle.
