A few years ago I heard that Miss Hornbeck, my hometown librarian, a vinegary virgin determined to protect children from sex, had commissioned a local artist to paint underpants on the nude figure of Mickey in Maurice Sendak's In the Night Kitchen. Only in Oklahoma, I snorted. But Miss Hornbeck, it turns out, was not an isolated wacko. As reported in Tony Kushner's elegant retrospective of the children's author's work, adding panties turned out to be a fairly common practice in towns across the land.
