Sushi Central is a wonderfully engrossing first novel thematically centered on the disillusionment of modern gay/queer youth. Calvin, the narrator and protagonist of this Australian novel, is a 16-year-old gay high school student in Brisbane. His disenchantment comes from having genuine feelings combined with an intense desire not to feel. Calvin's wish for blankness is the result of having no solid standard by which to evaluate (or emulate) healthy and authentic behavior. His parents are workaholics on antidepressants, his peers embrace a studied cynicism, and even the peripheral characters he encounters are primarily examples of been-there-done-that chic.
