Remember when Toronto used to hill itself as "the Festival of Festivals"? The Canadian self-deprecation contained in that tag implied that its annual movie smorgasbord was little more than a digest of lest-circuit hits with no definable vision or identity of its own. In a world where branding and sponsorship are everything, that kind of thinking obviously no longer cuts it--yet if anything, Toronto's even more of a smorgasbord now than it was 10 years ago when it ditched its apologetic tag line. Does it really need a "vision" anyway? Why not just show good movies and leave it at that?
