Article Excerpt Many people have an interest in looking at paintings, but most don't know a Monet from a Manet.
While some don't really care, others seek self-improvement through art-appreciation classes offered at local universities, museums and galleries.
In some instances, a deeper understanding of art simply makes trips to the museum more enjoyable. For others, it's the impetus for establishing an art collection of their own.
The challenge of self-improvement "is part of it," said David Thomas, vice president and program director for the Indianapolis Art Center, which offers various art history and hands-on art classes.
"A lot of people tell us that it's just something they've always wanted to do," Thomas said. "We had a considerable influx after [9/11]. I think some people came to the realization that life's not a sure thing, and they're in search of a little self-actualization in their creative lives."
Kathy Nagler, director of art appreciation programs at the Herron School of Art at IUPUI, sees this trend in many of the students who pass through her doors.
