Television reporter Mary McDermott endured more than a few stares of bewilderment when she informed acquaintances she had enrolled in a parenting class.

But the WISH-TV Channel 8 veteran remained unfazed. While they might have speculated whether she was having trouble raising her 3-year-old daughter whom she adopted from China, McDermott simply was seeking to become a better mother.

"I really wanted to be as good a parent as possible," she said. "I don't think there's anything more important than that."

The fact that she's shouldering the entire responsibility of raising her child as a single parent only bolstered her decision to seek guidance. So, in January, McDermott began a five-week course led by Broad Ripple counselor Michelle Gambs Rohen, a certified parenting instructor for the International Network for Children and Families.

The University of Notre Dame alumna returned to Indiana from Texas four years ago and brought the teachings of Kathryn Kvols, who wrote the "Redirecting Children's Behavior" course Rohen uses. The class is prevalent in Houston and is taught by instructors nationwide, although Rohen said she's the only one teaching it...
