Article Excerpt
Downtown's neighborhoods boast everything from bustling urban scenes to quiet, Victorian homes, offering a lifestyle to match every personality.

Marina

Where warehouses and vacant lots once stood, this neighborhood now offers condominiums, townhouses, lofts and single-room-occupancy units each offering a variety of architectural styles and prices, and providing an ideal residential setting. The area also includes the expanded San Diego Convention Center, Marriott and Hyatt Regency hotels, Seaport Village, the 11th Naval District Headquarters, and historic Pantoja Park. The former unsightly railroad tracks, which cut through the neighborhood along Harbor Drive, have been transformed into a linear park named in honor of Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. The bi-national Children's Museum lies across the street from Children's Park, with its grass, trees and pond. The Marina neighborhood includes a part of San Diego's rich cultural history, the Asian/Pacific Thematic Historic District, recognizing the contributions of Asian and Pacific Island cultures to the development of this city.

East Village

Downtown's largest neighborhood has experienced the greatest redevelopment effort. With the recently completed PFCO Park anchoring this bustling neighborhood, plans for the proposed two phases of the Bay to Park Link, additions to City College, new offices, hotels, and housing are already underway. Scattered throughout the 350-acre area are apartments, lofts, shops, art studios, and mixed use developments such as ICON, Park Terrace and The Mark. The area also includes the New School of Architecture, and the regional headquarters for the Metropolitan Transit Development Board (MTDB) and its affiliates, San Diego Trolley Corporation and San Diego Transit Corporation.
