World leaders, front-line workers, promises, discoveries, breakthroughs and puzzles filled the 15th International AIDS Conference in Bangkok, Thailand--six days of research and community presentations, speakers, skills exchange workshops, panel discussions, and a swirling sea of an estimated 20,000 delegates from over 160 countries.
The conference highlighted world leadership, yet community leaders noted that individual and collective unsung hero leaders were sidelined--people wiht HIV and their allies who without funds or infrastructure create great shifts in community or research to save lives on a daily basis. And though the conference gave some focus to women's issues, South African HIV + activist Shaun Mellors critiziced conference organizers for taking a step backward in its main programming. "Women are not a homogeneous group and their diversity of lives and realities were not effectively reflected in the program content. We did not hear the voices of women drug users, women prisoners, lesbians, trafficked women, and the girl child."
An AIDS vaccine is still in the making, and urgent calls were made for speeding up research, creation and distribution of prevention alternatives. The international team of Epidemiology and Prevention Rapporteurs (selected delegates roving through the conference reviewing abstracts, posters, presentations, and workshops) highlighted current studies underway of diaphragms, vaginal microbicides [chemicals used vaginally to inactivate or destroy HIV], vaccines, male circumcision and treatment of genital herpes as HIV preventive strategies.
