In the late 1980s, a little paging company called Mtel petitioned the federal government for a nationwide license.

To Mtel's surprise, the federal government's answer was no. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) just didn't believe there was much of a demand for nationwide service. The FCC's "no" seems inconceivable today when cell phones can take pictures and pagers download e-mail, but back then, "nationwide just wasn't on anybody's radar screen," said president and longtime employee Bruce Deer.

Of course, Mtel refused to take no for an answer. The company gathered the proof the FCC needed to get the license and by 1990 was the first to offer nationwide numeric paging. The next year, Mtel became the first company in the nation to launch nationwide wireless text messaging, a step up from phone number pages.
