Pots of gold? Gaming rolls into Mississippi.

In 1979, the Mississippi Gulf Coast was a quiet little beach resort. Tunica represented little more than a desolate stretch of flats in the impoverished Delta, the poorest county in the nation once compared to a third-world country. Greenville, Natchez and Vicksburg were sleepy river towns.

Then gaming rolled into Mississippi.

Today, the Magnolia State continues to reap the rewards of legalized gaming at the 29 state-regulated casinos, its success untarnished by corruption or scandal. Lately, even organized religious groups vehemently opposed to gaming at the onset have said little.

Throughout the nation's gaming industry, Mississippi Gaming Commission executive director Larry Gregory said the state's casino gaming is referred to as the "Mississippi Miracle."
