Around 1982, Jim Payne almost left the company he would later guide to an unprecedented level, a leader among national companies with an unrivaled sales force, and one that was pursued by a publicly-traded New York company.

"There were nine investors but four of us ran the company," recalled Payne, founder and former president, chairman and CEO of UAD Laboratories in Ridgeland. "The other three wanted to keep the company small and work a few Southern states to keep it manageable, but I felt the only way we'd be able to really succeed was to expand into other markets.
