Production costs have been a concern for farmers since farming began, but a strong argument could be made that never in the history of U.S. agriculture has the issue been more of a focus than in the last couple of decades. While such factors as poor commodity prices and increasing fuel costs have been major factors in the push by today's farmers to cut overhead, the real catalyst has been environmental and conservation issues.
