Article Excerpt SBD strongly encourages sensor manufacturers and developers to focus on offering sensors that can genuinely reduce the cost, while also significantly enhancing the reliability and functionality, of the OEM customer's product or system. To more optimally help reduce the cost, simplify the integration, and improve the performance of the customer's system, a sensor manufacturer or provider is advised to look at developing or offering a sensor system solution that includes smart signal amplification/conditioning electronics and can be very easily interfaced to the customer's system. A value-added sensor equipped with on-board signal conditioning and calibration electronics and a convenient (e.g., digital) interface can significantly minimize system development time and cost and help drive high-volume applications for sensors.
Senirion AG (Zurich, Switzerland, ++41-44-306-40-00)(www.sensirion.com)-a manufacturer of CMOS-based integrated, digital, and calibrated relative humidity/temperature sensors, gas flow sensors and mass flow controllers/meters (including air flow sensors), liquid mass flow sensors, and differential pressure sensors-has achieved significant success by focusing on providing value-added sensor system solutions that can be easily integrated and implemented by the company's OEM customers.
Moritz Lechner, co-founder and co-CEO of Sensirion, explained that Sensirion's patented RH/temperature sensors, which use a capacitive humidity sensor element and a semiconductor temperature sensor, and include on-board signal conditioning and calibration electronics, have penetrated markets for inexpensive resistive RH sensors (such as consumer weather stations) by providing OEMs' with a lower overall system cost solution, compared to conventional resistive RH sensors or conventional capacitive RH sensors that do not have on-board calibration and signal conditioning electronics and require calibration. He noted that Sensirion has, in a relatively short time, carved out a presence in the humidity sensor marketplace by offering lower-end and higher-end RH/temperature integrated sensor system solutions that address a broad range of applications instead of targeting a particular niche within the humidity sensor market.
Lechner also mentioned that customers like an integrated, calibrated sensor with a digital interface that can be directly connected to essentially any microprocessor system, since such sensors are less expensive and easier to use.
Sensirion has been asked to sell temperature sensors separately; but the company remains focused on providing RH/temperature...
