Winter is just around the corner, and you know what that means--flu season is here! Influenza, a disease of the breathing passages, hits the United States from November to March every year.

In most people, the flu causes nothing more than fever, aches, exhaustion--and missed school and work. But it can also kill. More than 150 children under age 18 died from influenza during the last U.S. flu season.

That number could be much worse. In 1918, the flu killed more than 600,000 people in this country--about 20 times the usual number of deaths from the flu. Some formerly healthy people died within hours of getting sick. Doctors were powerless to stop the pandemic (an epidemic that strikes a large geographic area).

Another flu pandemic could reappear. That's one reason scientists work year-round to track flu viruses and prepare their toughest defenses: flu vaccines.
