Anger in the local minority community over a Eugene Police Department report denying an allegation of racial profiling far exceeds the dismay that surfaced in past efforts to rename a street for Martin Luther King Jr. and a school for labor union activist Cesar Chavez, minority advocates said Monday.

"We're not talking about the naming of a street - we're talking about people's livelihoods and freedoms," said Marilyn Mays, president of the Eugene-Springfield branch of the NAACP. "People are upset, and do not believe that justice was served. People are very concerned about their kids growing up in this community."

The target of Mays' and others' ire is an internal police report released last Wednesday ruling that an officer had legal reason to stop and question Cortez Jordan as he was walking from a Eugene nightclub during Labor Day weekend.
