Lynne Phillips of Eugene won the Traditional Archers of Oregon annual Pope and Young Shoot high-score trophy this year for the 10th time since 1986. Phillips, whose husband, Cecil, taught her archery skills nearly 30 years ago, has used compound, recurve and longbows over the years, but now uses her Brackenbury recurve exclusively since the Pope and Young event became a traditional-equipment-only shoot. Julie Woodman, a friend of Phillips, has won the overall score trophy the three years that Phillips hasn't. The Pope and Young shoot, held annually near Brownsville, requires legal hunting equipment, but is reminiscent of old English warfare with events such as "clout" and "wand" simulating long-range military field archery.
