McNeeley, president and chief operating officer of Chicago Tube and Iron Company, Chicago, who spoke at the Metals Service Center Institute's Economic Summit: Forecast 2005 on Sept. 14. McNeeley holds a doctorate in business and economics and is an adjunct professor at Northwestern University, where he teaches strategic management for engineers.

Globally, the concept of the balance of power is critical to success or failure. If one nation in a free market becomes stronger than another, other nations can join forces to balance that power. Those free market forces that apply to our economy apply to the world political scene as well. If one economy, or country, were to become too powerful, three or four others would aggregate their power to keep that one country in check.
