Ranking member of the Carreno ballet family and former principal with Ballet Nacional de Cuba, Lazaro Carreno is principal teacher and coach for Houston Ballet. When he was 11 and only two years into his initial ballet study at the Cuban National Ballet School, he went to Leningrad to study at the Vaganova Institute, where Baryshnikov was among his contemporaries. He began teaching in the 1970s and counts among his students the dancers Joan Boada, Jose Manuel Carreno, Jesus Corales, Luis Serrano, Carlos Acosta, and the Feijoo sisters, Lorna and Lorena. Writer Toba Singer recently observed Carreno's men's class in Houston and spoke with him about his philosophy. Oscar Trujillo assisted with the translation from Spanish.
