Robert Emick looks out his kitchen window across 30,000 acres of ranchland that have been in his family since 1918. For 85 years the view has been of cows and prairie, but now, in every direction, he sees wind turbines.

Emick's ranch lies about 24 miles south of Lamar. In 1995, Xcel Energy and Enron began research to determine if the wind direction, speed and consistency on Emick's land was right for profitable generation of electric power. After 18 months of studies, it was determined that the Emick family's land was perfect for a wind farm.

In fact, it was so perfect that it would become the fifth largest wind farm in the United States and give the struggling agricultural region new life--but not before the wind was knocked from the companies' sails a few times. With the demise of Enron, the project was put in jeopardy before a new company stepped in.

"There was a series of events where we said 'I wonder if it will ever happen,'" said Don Emick, Robert's 48-year-old son.
