We've all seen photographs of turn-of-the-century Eugene and imagined ourselves on those car-free streets with familiar names. In that emerging city on Nov. 14, 1904, the Fortnightly Club, a local women's study group, convinced the Eugene City Council to assume management of its volunteer library in order to qualify for one of 2,500 grants being made by steel magnate Andrew Carnegie.

The newly established Eugene Public Library became the first Carnegie library in Oregon, built at 11th Avenue and Willamette Street for $4,852.95. Our community is now celebrating the immeasurable benefits of a century of public library service.
