Convention center, ConVis officials at odds over forecast.

At least one local tourism official is projecting that stiff competition for convention business will significantly cut into the number of hotel rooms the San Diego Convention Center Corp. will book over the next several years.

"The news is that fiscal year 2004 was a record year," said Fred Sainz, the center's vice president for public affairs. "However we're seeing a significant amount of softening in 2005 through 2008."

Sainz estimates that bookings for hotel rooms by conventioneers could be off by as much as 10 percent during that period.

However, Reint Reinders, who heads the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau--the convention center's marketing arm--thinks business will be up between now and 2008, though he didn't predict how much of an increase he expects.
