There are myriad statistics in the world of professional football.

The NFL happily disperses these numbers for public consumption to enable announcers to talk about their significance, and to allow experts to pontificate on their value.

Categories such as total yards, rushing yards, first downs per game, sack percentage and even gross punting average are often spoken of with veneration. Those numbers all hold significance, but which ones are truly important?

Since the end of the 1964 season, two statistics have mattered more than anything: yards per pass play and yards per pass play allowed by the defense.
