Media need to watch their balance

There are many ways of slanting the news, from the blatant to the subtle.

Editorial policies that consistently favor a selected viewpoint are examples of the blatant and should be obvious to everybody.

Other influences may be less obvious and may therefore deserve some extra attention.

For instance, the amount of space, time or favorable placement given to news items may require that the reader/listener pay careful attention over a period of weeks or months to discern patterns that reveal viewpoints not explicitly expressed.
