Benet had the 2,000-yard rushing attack, the Division I recruit at quarterback, and home field advantage in Saturday's Class 6A playoff opener in Lisle.

Batavia had field position and two fewer turnovers.

In a battle of 6-3 squads, Batavia won 26-14 to earn the program's first second-round playoff berth since 1998. The Bulldogs will host Freeport next weekend on the strength of their opportunistic offense, the all-around play of senior running back Tim Herrmann, a solid defense, and doubly-dangerous quarterback Sean Scholl.

Herrmann's 56-yard return of the opening kickoff and 8-yard touchdown run with 9:11 left in the first quarter book-ended Batavia's 6-play, 39-yard scoring drive. Herrmann ran for 120 yards and 2 touchdowns on 22 carries, caught a 5-yard pass, and kicked 2 points-after....
