Now that the bubble has burst on the once explosive Information Technology industry the role of IT has evolved in many ways within the San Diego community. The changing face of IT signifies the rapidly shifting roles of engineering specialties, software development, Interact development, data analysis and telecommunications, all of which form the underpinnings for nearly every industry--from hospitality to biotech. Additionally, much of the mystery has disappeared from IT, enabling end-users to make more efficient use of data and modern computing. For example, the skills needed to develop complex Web sites in the 1990s, once commanding salaries in excess of $70,000, are now commonly taught in high school Web-building classes.

There is, however, a silver lining to the seemingly dark cloud of yesterday's IT industry. The San Diego Workforce Partnership' "Path to Prosperity" study (December 2002 projects jobs in communications and software to increase by about 25 percent by 2010. However an increase in job projections does not offer a complete picture of the significant changes underway for IT in San Diego. The types of jobs...
