Many of county's health care workers can breathe a sigh of relief.

None of the 289 positions the county supervisors recently targeted for elimination to meet the more than $50 million loss in state funding resulted in actual layoffs.

"No one is walking out of the door without a job," said Alfredo Aguirre, children's mental health director for the county Health and Human Services Agency.

Most of the jobs on the chopping block were in the health and probation departments and would have included nurses, social workers, office clerks, and probation...
