In one fell swoop, the Internet broadened our horizons and made our world smaller.

It also expanded the number of crimes nationwide--as well as new ways to commit them.

The Internet offers criminals an anonymous cloak, as well as a much safer way to steal identities, money, or technical discoveries. Thugs today don't need to pick up a gun; they just turn on a computer.

Besides being safer, Internet crimes can offer a bigger bang for the buck.

The Federal Trade Commission recently reported that identity theft alone cost U.S. businesses and financial institutions nearly $48 billion last year. Although identity theft can take place by sorting through garbage or snatching a wallet, it's one of the nation's fastest-growing cybercrimes as well.
