When the first case of arson at a San Diego housing development erupted last month causing $50 million in damage, area homebuilders thought it was a bizarre, and likely one-time, event.

But after a second round of arson destroyed four houses under construction and damaged three others Sept. 19, many builders are bracing for more.

"It's very disturbing. You don't know if these latest fires were a copycat," said David Stearn, senior development director for Florida-based Taylor Woodrow Homes.

Taylor Woodrow is a managing partner for Santaluz, an upscale housing development on 3,800 acres east of Fairbanks Ranch. It is about a mile from the latest fires.

In the early morning hours of Sept. 19, houses under construction were burned in an area known as Torrey Highlands, north of state Route 56 in an area undergoing heavy development between Carmel Valley and Rancho Penasquitos. An early damage estimate is $450,000.
