London -- For the third year running, a Swiss-based company has won the gold award for technology in The Wall Street Journal Europe's Innovation Awards, held in association with Accenture.

Software company ABMI won the top prize for its technology that enables doctors to detect the presence of blood clots in the brain. U.K.

companies PocketThis, Acaris, Xceleron and Cambridge InnoVision were also amongst the winners and runners-up (full details below).

The awards are designed to honour the individuals or organisations that, in the judges' opinion, had developed the best new ideas, products, inventions, services or business methods that improve the quality of life or enhance productivity.

Innovation remains a key priority for U.S. businesses, which accounted for 40% of the total nominations. U.K. successes included one of the six category winners and three runners-up.

The winning companies demonstrated that, despite a weak economy and a dearth of seed capital for new ventures, Europeans continue to innovate by tapping in to research grants, angel investors and even their own savings to undertake research and development.

The awards reflect the U.K.'s significant R&D allocation in pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, which ranks second-largest world-wide after the U.S. The prominent...
