Article Excerpt South and west of Fort Myers, developer Will Stout is helping to further the incredibly rapid growth of the city of Cape Coral. In terms of land, Cape Coral is the second largest city in the state at 114 square miles. The city, with its 400 miles of canals, has grown from 34,167 people in 1980 to about 120,000 today.
Until a few years ago, an out-of-state company tightly controlled most Cape Coral acreage. When the owner offered land for sale, Stout quickly snapped up several large parcels and moved his Atlanta development firm, Realmark Group, to Lee County.
"I made my mark in Georgia," Stout says. "I decided the smartest place to invest my money and to move my operation was in Southwest Florida."
"And," says Stout, "what we have successfully done is develop some upscale communities and repositioned the real estate market here."
Cape Coral has three major commercial/industrial areas now, and economic developers plan to add up to four more in order to add light industry or service businesses. And as those new Lee County firms come on line, developers like Stout will make sure plenty of housing is available.
