As the San Diego Water Department promotes incentives for saving water, many San Diego area businesses find the often-delayed benefits of investing in conservation are well worth the wait.
Others, however, still find the costs prohibitive.
Despite the recently signed Colorado River water transfer deal that would guarantee San Diego County enough water for the next 75 years, city and county water officials, landscape architects, grounds superintendents, property managers, builders, business owners, and even entrepreneurs are getting more involved in water conservation.
The San Diego Water Department offers a free survey program to local businesses, production plants, hotels, and other non-residential facilities on ways to save money on their water bills. Vouchers are also available for water-efficient fixtures and equipment, including low-flush toilets, cooling tower conductivity controllers, and commercial front-loading washers.
Pam Richardson, president of both the San Diego Hotel-Motel Association and the Hilton San Diego Airport Harbor Island hotel, said almost all hotels use those washers now.
The city water department also offers a guaranteed water program that can exempt research and development companies and industrial manufacturing firms from certain mandatory water restrictions during drought.
